No other room in your home receives traffic as your bathroom does.
That makes it all the more important to get the bathroom right. Bathrooms are water-prone, small and can get dingy if proper care is not taken. Painting your bathroom with the right wall paint colours is just one step in ensuring this. But if done right, you will have a nice and clean feel every time you step into the bathroom.
So let’s get started.
When you are painting your bathroom, make sure to keep these five points in mind.
- Clean the Bathroom Walls
Your bathroom is unlike some other rooms in your home.
For instance, you can get away with a little dusting in your bedroom or your dining room before painting. But that won’t work for the bathroom.
Here is a good reason why you should absolutely clean the bathroom walls before painting.
Soap scum, grime, dirt and hard water crystals accumulate on the walls over a period of time. Soap scum is a big culprit. If not removed, it can cause the new paint to peel off. And, this is if you can get the paint to stick on the surface in the first place.
These embedded substances can mess your paint, your effort and your money. So make sure that you use good cleaning products before the paint job.
- Clean Behind the Toilet Tank
There are two ways to paint the bathroom.
One way is to remove the toilet tank and paint properly.
The other way to get the painting done as quickly as possible.
We understand that the second option looks so easy. But the space between the tank and wall is so small. This would mean that you would be painting it repeatedly to get a full solid colour.
At the end of the day, when the paint dries, you will see a nice little ring around the tank. And all it will scream is “Poor choice!” Perhaps you will scream too!
So, let’s go back to the first option. Remove the tank. It is not that difficult.
The difficult part is the seat section. So before painting, turn off the water supply, flush the toilet and then remove the tank.
Oh! And, you might need some old towels on the floor.
- Paint with Light Colours
Unless you live in a mansion, your bathroom will be a small space.
If you use a dark metallic wall paint, it can make your bathroom feel claustrophobic, cluttered and smaller.
But this does not mean that you need to paint your bathroom white.
Some alternate colours for the bathroom can be a nice, light, airy blue, a light yellow and off white or a light sea green with white.
- Choose the Right Paint
What does it mean, you may ask.
A good bathroom paint is resistant to mould and should be able to able to repel water.
So you should be looking for waterproof paints for walls in your bathroom.
In case, you are not interested in buying special paints, go for gloss paints or the eggshell paints. These paints also do not retain moisture and can last longer.
- Painting the Shower
The shower usually has tiles to keep the water off the walls.
This means, if you want to paint the shower, you should paint it with gloss paints.
However, not all homes have tiled shower stalls. Some even have painted drywalls. It doesn’t make sense.
But if you do have a drywall in the shower stall, choose the glossiest paint that you can find in the market. We are talking about premium enamel paints.
Although these paints are expensive, they will protect your walls in the shower stall.
And, we promise you will be glad that you did it.
